Director of Agriculture Business Development
The Propane Education & Research Council (PERC), a Washington D.C. based non-profit organization, has an excellent opportunity for a Director of Agriculture Business Development. This position, based in D.C., reports to the Chief Business Development Officer and is the chief architect of the agriculture market portfolio and is responsible for its success as measured by metrics set with the Chief Business Development Officer (CBDO). The primary job is to maximize propane consumption for agriculture markets. The work focus is on promoting and facilitating the adoption of propane-powered equipment, appliances and vehicles in the agriculture sector and includes new product launches, preserving existing markets, reviewing emerging markets, and identifying and evaluating new market opportunities.
Working with the CBDO, this position develops business plans, goals, objectives, and tactics for accomplishing goals. Initiates projects (funding dockets) to carry out the tactics and brings a team together around market strategy and business development goals. This position may utilize contractors, communications partners, product partners, and consultants to accomplish the business plan. A key responsibility is to serve as the project leader or to select project leaders for the tasks needed to carry out the agriculture market business plan, and for managing the market portfolio of projects. The goal is to align priorities of different projects such that deliverables support market development goals.
This position oversees multiple market development projects with a common market theme. This job requires skills such as toughness, fairness, and comfort delivering both good and bad news to management with regard to the project portfolio.
This position also reinforces PERC’s business perspective throughout the Propel process and coordinates with PERC leadership to provide updates on project status, schedule appropriate project reviews, and provide input on team member performance evaluations.
Business Development and Outreach
Develops annual business plan and goals in conjunction with the CBDO.
Specifies market requirements for current and future products by conducting market research supported by PERC staff and outside consultants and/or market analysis services as needed.
Remains up-to-date on market trends, customers’ interests and buying behaviors, sellers, and competitive products.
Develops the market strategy and identifies tactics that drive demand for propane.
Develops and implements a go-to-market plan for new products, working with cross functional PERC teams, product partners, communications partners, and consultants to execute.
Coordinates with manufacturing partners and others to plan for and support the launch of new products and manages the cross-functional implementation of the product launch plan.
Develops programs in emerging markets with potential to expand propane utilization.
Fosters relationships with potential strategic partners in the market.
Project Planning, Management, and Leadership
Leads staff and Executive Management Team (EMT) toward identifying project deliverables, results, timelines, milestones, and resources (both financial and staffing).
Determines skill sets needed for project team(s). Works with functional and market managers, assembles team, including consultants and contractors as appropriate.
Leads project team in development of project plans.
Delegates tasks and responsibilities to appropriate personnel.
Proactively manages changes in project scope, identifies potential issues, and devises contingency plans.
Establishes project acceptance criteria and establishes review and approval process for team members’ deliverables.
Identifies and resolves issues and conflicts within the project team.
Ensures consultants and contractors compliance with Statement of Work.
New Product Process Planning Responsibilities
Provides leadership to project managers.
Works with market analysis staff and consultants to assess market and sales potential of concepts.
Leads project team in conducting detailed technical assessment.
Identifies target markets and develops positioning strategy.
Forecasts unit and gallon sales.
Develops market launch plan including communications outreach strategy for all audiences and stakeholders.
Implements the market launch plan.
Measures and adjusts launch plan as needed.
Business Support Responsibilities
Ensures adherence to PERC strategic plan.
Participates in annual business plan development by developing business plan, goals, and objectives and tactics for accomplishing goals.
Advises EMT, Council, and industry members on strategic issues and ideas for growth.
Contributes to growth of PERC through market leadership.
Contributes to growth of the project team through collaboration and sharing knowledge with other portfolio managers and PERC senior management.
Coaches, mentors, motivates, and supervises project teams and contractors, and influences them to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work.
Involves Market Outreach & Training working group as team members to guide business development decisions.
Works with Strategic Partners to build relationships to support future collaborations.
Establishes metrics and evaluation methods and monitors and reports on progress.
Monitors project health and identifies slippages or setbacks as soon as possible.
Partners effectively with other groups both inside and outside of the propane industry.
Develops new business relationships that support PERC strategic objectives.
A BS Degree or higher is required.
Strong project management skills - ability to perform well on multiple concurrent projects while working under tight timelines.
